Our History

From a bathing spot to an award-winning spa resort

1846 – The beginnings of Gyopárhalma

The district emerges as a residential area for the poorer sections of the population, with small houses and orchards. Lake Gyopárosi is initially used purely for practical purposes: for soaking hemp and as a watering place for horses.

The discovery: The locals recognised the beneficial effects of the lake water.

1869 – The birth of the spa

Dr László Elek, a local doctor, took the initiative and began construction of the spa on the southern shore of the lake.

The result: Scientific analyses confirm the healing properties of the water for numerous ailments.

1870s – The first success

Within a few years, Gyopárosfürdő becomes a popular spa resort, attracting guests from distant regions.

Prominent visitor: The famous writer Kálmán Mikszáth visits the spa and writes glowing reviews of Gyopárosfürdő.

1906 – The major breakthrough

The town of Orosháza recognises the potential anew. The Orosháza–Szentes railway line is opened and runs directly through Gyopárosfürdő.

Special trains now bring spa guests comfortably to the baths – popularity rises rapidly.

1914–1945 – Difficult times

The two world wars and the post-war years slow down development. Despite occasional setbacks, the spa remains popular with visitors.

From 1958 – Continuous modernisation

Start of systematic investment, which continues to this day.

The result: The simple spa town is transformed into a modern spa complex featuring:

  • Adventure pool
  • Therapeutic spa
  • Beach area
  • Wellness facilities
