From field to plate

The culinary soul of Orosháza

The region’s deep-rooted farming tradition has had a decisive influence on the local cuisine, giving it a distinctive character. It is therefore no surprise that, at prestigious competitions, it is the people of Orosháza who stand out with the most delicious Csabai sausages.

The best-known local speciality is Orosháza bread, which owes its existence to the region’s rich agricultural tradition.

Equally popular is the Orosháza banana: this hand-shaped dessert made from buttery egg biscuit dough resembles the fruit of the same name in shape and is a favourite with locals and visitors alike.

Another cornerstone is poultry. The internationally renowned Merian company enjoys an excellent reputation far beyond the city limits, particularly for its exquisite foie gras products.

Among the most notable dishes is the Orosháza wood-plated dish: an exceptionally hearty beef stew with aromatic ragout that is an absolute must-try.

Finally, the town’s oldest sweet treat is the germ flatbread: a traditional Easter pastry made from ground wheat germ, to which enzymes impart a naturally sweet flavour during the germination process. Rich in nutrients and with a distinctive aroma, it is available at the Orosháza Market.
